CONTACT US NOWAll your questions, answered!
What is SD-WAN and how does it differ from the traditional WAN architectures?
SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network) uses a centralized management interface to intelligently route traffic across multiple transport links (MPLS, broadband, LTE). Unlike legacy WANs, which rely on static, device-by-device configurations and are hardware-centric, SD-WAN offers dynamic path selection, application-aware routing, and zero-touch provisioning for faster deployment and simpler management.
What are the key benefits of having Cisco SD-WAN?
- Reduced Cost: Leverage affordable internet or 4G/5G connections instead of exclusively relying on expensive MPLS circuits.
- Performance & Reliability: Application-aware routing and dynamic path selection ensure critical applications use the lowest-latency links, improving user experience.
- Enterprise-Grade Security: Built-in SASE integration (Talos-powered IPS, AMP, SSL proxy, cloud firewalls) provides end-to-end protection from branch to cloud.
- Cloud Readiness: Direct Cloud Access and Cloud OnRamp features optimize SaaS, IaaS, and colocation connectivity.
- Simplicity & Scalability: Single centralized console for configuration and monitoring; zero-touch provisioning accelerates branch deployment.
Which SD-WAN subscription tiers are available, and how do they differ?
There are three subscription tiers—Essential, Advantage, and Premier—each available with either 4G or 5G internet bundles. Differences include:
- Essential: Basic application-aware routing, enterprise firewall with IPS, basic WAN/path optimizations, and centralized management.
- Advantage: All Essential features plus advanced WAN routing (MPLS, VRF, LISP), enhanced security (AMP with SSL proxy, URL filtering), and Cloud OnRamp for IaaS/SaaS.
- Premier: All Advantage features plus full SASE architecture, integrated Border Plus orchestration, Voice/UC gateways, vAnalytics, and expanded Umbrella SIG seats.
What hardware is included with each SD-WAN plan?
Each plan includes a Cisco WAN Edge router with an appropriate cellular PIM. Hardware selection depends on chosen bandwidth tiers (T0: up to 25 Mbps; T1: up to 200 Mbps).
How do I choose the right bandwidth tier for my branch or campus?
Selection should be based on expected application load and user count.
- T0: Uplink/DL up to 25 Mbps, aggregation up to 50 Mbps. Suitable for small branches with light to moderate traffic.
- T1: Uplink/DL up to 200 Mbps, aggregation up to 400 Mbps. Ideal for larger sites or high-traffic environments.
What is the contract duration, and can I customize my plan?
All SD-WAN plans require a 36-month commitment. You can customize your plan based on your needs by selecting the connectivity, bandwidth and SD-WAN license.
Can I have multiple SD-WAN plans simultaneously?
Yes. You may order multiple plans. For example, different branches can each have their own plan.
What happens if I cancel or terminate the plan before 36 months?
Early cancellation or dunning incurs a prorated penalty fee. Upon cancellation, all services included in that plan will be suspended immediately.
What are the main security features included in each SD-WAN license?
- Enterprise Firewall with Talos-powered IPS & App Controls: Real-time threat detection and prevention.
- IPsec VPN & App-Aware Firewall: Secure overlay tunnels for private and multi cloud access.
- AMP with SSL Proxy & URL Filtering (Advantage and Premier): Inspects encrypted traffic and controls web access.
- Cisco Umbrella SIG Essentials® (Premier): Cloud-based firewall, URL/file-type controls, threat grid, and roaming user protection.
How does SD-WAN optimize cloud application performance?
- Cloud OnRamp for IaaS/SaaS: Automatically selects optimal paths to major cloud providers (e.g., AWS, Azure).
- AppQoE & WAAS RTU: Monitors application quality of experience and applies WAN optimizations for accelerated performance.
- Dynamic Path Selection: Continuously evaluates links (latency, jitter, packet loss) and routes traffic over the best available path.
Which deployment models are supported for SD-WAN controllers?
- Enterprise IT (On-Premises or Private Cloud): Deploy and manage vManage, vSmart, and vBond controllers in your own environment.
- MSP Cloud: Managed by your service provider’s operations team.
What management and orchestration tools are available?
- vManage: Centralized (multi-tenant or dedicated) console for configuration, monitoring, and analytics.
- vSmart: Control plane components (policy distribution, route management).
- vBond: Orchestrator for secure device authentication and initial tunnel setup (Zero-Touch Provisioning with PnP).
- vAnalytics: Provides real-time visibility and troubleshooting insights.
How quickly can new branches be brought online with SD-WAN?
Zero-Touch Provisioning (ZTP) and Plug-and-Play (PnP) allow new WAN Edge routers to automatically discover controllers (vBond, vSmart, vManage) as soon as they connect to the internet. This typically enables new branch deployment within hours instead of days.
Is there support for direct branch-to-cloud access and security?
Yes. SD-WAN enables Direct Cloud Access by leveraging local internet breakout for SaaS and public cloud traffic while applying full security inspection (App-Aware Firewall, IPS, URL filtering, AMP, Umbrella SIG). This reduces latency and backhaul costs without sacrificing security.
